Peter Varey (left) launched his Life on the Edge: Peter Danckwerts GC, MBE, FRS, Brave, Shy, Brilliant at Heffers in Cambridge on 11 June. The book is now available from Amazon. Among the many illustrious guests were Sir Leszek Krzysztof Borysiewicz (Vice-Chancellor), John Davidson (ex-Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering), Sir David Harrison (on the staff in Peter Danckwerts's dept) , the current Shell Professor (and Pro-Vice-Chancellor) Lynn Gladden and Ian Fleming Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and Emeritus Fellow of Pembroke College.
What filthy weather!
I can't remember a June as wet as this. I woke up at 2 this morning to find that our roof was leaking and water was dripping into the end of my bed. It doesn't bode well for my visit this evening to the launch of Peter Varey's Life on the Edge. Cambridge is a very dull place in the rain. Nor does it bode well for the Wynkyn de Worde Society summer outing – bring a picnic and pray for sun!
